One of the white varieties used in Greece for the production of Retsina.
DOC wine region comprising the sub-regions of Almeirim, Coruche, Cartaxo, Chamusca, Santarém and Tomar. It has a wide variety of soils and vineyards. Over the last 15 years, the vines closer to Tejo, planted in more fertile fields and thus producing higher quality wines, were displaced to poorer, slope fields. For this reason, and also due to investments made in wineries, Ribatejo's wines are today considered to be of very high quality.
White grape variety grown in Friuli and Slovenia (Rebula). It produces a light, floral wine.
Excellent in all its natural components. Well balanced rich wines are complex.
Alcohol richness: the amount of pure alcohol in 100litres of wine or distilled, measured at 20ºC and in alcohol degrees or volume (10º or 10%, 12º or 12%, etc.).
Strip of land between the vines that is left unploughed because the plough does not reach it. The ridge requires special care to remove weeds. This operation is usually performed by hand. Although there are some chemical herbicides, these should be handled very carefully, since they have some incovenients.
One of the queen aromatic white varieties, grown in Alsace, Germany, Spain (Penedes, Somontano), Australia, Chile, California, etc. It is distinguished by its fine, citric aromas. Its small, tight bunches give a medium yield, though some winegrowers submit them to long prunings in an attempt to get overproduction. Its thick skin protects it from rot; however, when it is attacked by Botrytis, it can produce exceptional liqueur wines of great elegance. It is a late ripener, therefore benefiting from dry, fresh, sunny autumns.
Taxes charged on wines and spirits.
