Gooseneck
Pipe in the shape of a gooseneck, located over a still's boiler. Its shape is very important, since it allows some of the distilled vapours to condense and go back to the still.
 
Gouveio
White grape variety recommended in the Douro region. It is also called Verdelho.
 
Graciano
Spanish name for the Morrastrell variety (not to be confused with Monastrell), grown for years in Languedoc-Roussillon. Nowadays, this variety is only grown in Rioja and Navarra. It produces an aromatic wine that fits well to wood ageing.
 
Graciosa - Indication of Regulated Provenance
IPR of the Azores. It occupies the total area of the Graciosa island, below 150metres of altitude. The vine area is very small. It produces a white wine, "Pedras Brancas", in the local Cooperative Winery.
 
Graft
Joining of two vegetable structures, thus getting a new plant, derived from the previous two. Vitis viniferas are mostly grafted on roots resistant to phylloxera.
 
Grain
Fruit, grape berry.
 
Granada
Red ageing wine. It is dark red coloured with ochre reflexes.
 
Grand cru
Attribute of excellence in white and red wines. It is used in the Bordeaux and Bourgogne regions.
 
Grande Champagne
The best region to produce Charente, whose grapes originate a special cognac. The label sometimes mentions this provenience as Grande or Fine Champagne.
 
Grande reserva
Designation attributed to Spanish wines long-aged in oak casks and in bottle. Different Regulatory Committees determine minimum ageing periods to obtain this designation.
