Romorantin
Ordinary white variety grown in some parts of the Rhone Valley.
 
Room
Tasting room: place prepared for tasting (with appropriate material, etc.), combining a set of optimum conditions for its good development (silence, brightness, etc.).
 
Rooting
Vine reproduction technique that consists of planting a vine shoot of the mother plant and cutting it off once it has created roots. This ancestral technique can only be used in countries that aren't under the threat of phylloxera and can, therefore, plant vines without grafting. One of such countries is Chile.
 
Rootstock
The rootstock is essential for the growing of vines, whose quality, production and life span depend on it.
 
Rosary
Vertical chain of fine bubbles that results in the release of carbonic gas in a glass of sparkling wine.
 
Rosé
Pinkish wine that is obtained directly from the pressing of red grapes, without undergoing maceration.
 
Rose
Floral smell resembling that exhaled by roses, rich in tones of open rose, withered rose and rose petals, which are conferred by terpenic components (geranium and nerol) and phenylethyl alcohol. It sometimes has the tone of wood or rosewood, which is conferred by lianol.
 
Rosé sangria
The best rosés are obtained by siphoning (sangria) of the tank, i.e., fermenting a red must and separating the wine from its skins after a couple of hours, when it reaches the desired colour and tannin.
 
Rot
Rot of grapes due to fungi, together with adverse climatic conditions such as, for instance, rain during maturation.
 
Rotten
Unpleasant smell resembling that of stagnant water. It is mainly released by wines that haven't been taken care of.
