Vine Weevils
Vine weevils are derived from the Otiorrhyncus sp beetle. Between April and May the beetles head for the grapevine’s leaves and buds in search of food. The adults (only females) are black/grey coloured and about 10 mm long. They have nocturnal habits, so they go back to the soil each morning. Vine weevils enter the soil and attack the grapevine’s roots.
- “Disappearance” of buds (adults feed on buds, young shoots and leaves) - Weakening of the grapevine, since adults feed on its roots
Cultural control:
- Manual removal of adults (performed at night) - Apply trap bands (cardboard with glue or wool) around the trunk to prevent the adults from climbing it
Biological control:
- Use of nematodes that feed on larvae
Chemical control:
- carbofuran - deltamethrin - endosulfan
