  Grape characteristics
Name Tinto Cão
Type of grape variety Red
Description Tinto Cão is cultivated in the area of Douro since the 18th Century. However, as it wasn’t very productive, it has never been much appreciated by farmers. By the nineteen eighties it was discovered that this grape variety has good qualities for the production of Port wine, so its cultivation was spread to other regions, such as Dão, Estremadura and Península de Setúbal, where it exists in small quantities. Tinto Cão has very small, late-ripening bunches. Besides being very resistant to diseases and rottenness, it also tolerates very high temperatures. This grape variety is usually blended with Touriga Nacional, Aragonez and other grape varieties, producing deeply coloured wines of delicate and floral aromas.
