Most regulation concerning the growing of vines and winemaking in Portugal derives from European Union directives. The bodies whose functions have a national scope are responsible for controlling the wine sector and establishing a connection between the European Union, the Government and other international organisations in the sector.

Wine committees and institutes (such as Port or Madeira) have a regional field of action and control a region’s vine and wine production in a way to preserve the wine’s quality and maintain the region’s identity.

Apart from their sphere of influence, these entities are responsible for providing all the information about the legislation related to the wine sector.
