Training Systems Pruning Tying Green Interventions

In the Azores, the vines are trained near the soil, without wires. Lately, the unilateral and bilateral cordon training systems have been used in some explorations, since they represent a good support for the vine and facilitate cultivation. However, these vine training systems don’t adapt well to the region’s climate, since they don’t protect the vine from the wind. Therefore, it is necessary to build enclosures, barriers that protect the vine from the wind’s destructive power.

In soils made up of volcanic rocks and cracks caused by their erosion, the vines are trained directly on the rocks. According to the vine’s evolution period, namely during flowering and maturation, one “lifts” the plant to enable it to develop normally.
