The main goal of vine training is to provide the best conditions for the development of the vine, in order for it to produce quality grapes for the production of wine.
Vine training allows to guide the vine’s growth and guarantee its foliage won’t block sunlight in a way that concentrates too much moisture in the plant.
The vine training method has influence on the distance between the grapevines (planting distance), the density of planting (the greater the distance, the less the production of each grapevine) and on the orientation of the grapevines.
The selection of the vine training system is related to the soil and the grape varieties to be planted. Most Portuguese wine regions have characteristic training systems.
