Beira Interior is an area of castles and fortifications. As it is so close to Spain, the region’s defence has always been one of the major worries of its inhabitants. This is why there are numerous war traces and military monuments in the region, from which two stand out: the Centum Cellas tower, built by the Romans, probably to store food, and Almeida, a village defended by fortifications built in the 17th Century. The growing of vines in the region is focused in the areas of Pinhel and Castelo Rodrigo, where the vines contrast with the granite castles. South of the region, the landscape is dominated by Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in continental Portugal. And why not go for a walk or cycle along the mountain? If you are more adventurous, try skiing or snowboarding.
