Name Azal Tinto
Type of grape variety Red
Description High quality red grape variety, recommended for the southern counties (6) of the Demarcated Region, where it is intensively cultivated; less productive and rustic, it produces ruby colour wines with an undefined aroma, slightly acid and full-bodied.

Synonymy: or «Azar», is known as «Amaral» in Penafiel and Amarante, as «Cainho Bravo» or «Cainho Miúdo» in Monção, as «Cainzinho» in Arcos de Valdevez and as «Sousão Galego» in the area of Basto.

Budding open, very cottony, white and with the margins strongly carmine.
Young leaf yellow with brown spots and more seldom copper-coloured, with a medium to low intensity anthocyanin pigmentation of the six first leaves; carmine petiole and main veins; very cottony and slightly bristly on the down side of the blade.
Flower androgynous.
Shoots red internodes and nodes on the back side and green on the frontal side; low anthocyanin pigmentation of the buds; erect to half-erect growth.
Tendrils discontinuous, long, bristly, straight and with early fall.
Adult leaf small size, orbicular, with five lobes, flat, medium green and slightly bubbly; medium length teeth and rectilinear margins; closed and V shaped petiolar sinus, open and U shaped upper lateral sinus; carmine petiolar point as well as the beginning of the mains veins in both sides, very cottony and bristly on the down side; very cottony and bristly petiole, shorter than the medium main vein.
Bunch small and winged; medium compactness; medium length peduncle and insignificant lignification.
Berry medium size and uniform; round; dark blue colour; with bloom; medium thick skin and little apparent hilum; uncoloured, soft pulp with a simple flavour; medium long pedicel of easy separation.
Seeds little hard tegument; predominantly two per berry; medium size, pyriform, short and little pronounced beak.
Stalks elliptic cross-section, striated surface, yellow brownish colour; small and thin; medium long internodes and relatively large nodes; small, sharp and prominent buds.
