  Grape characteristics
Name Rufete
Type of grape variety Red
Description Rufete, also known as Tinta Pinheira, is grown in the Douro and Dão regions, mainly in the sub-regions of Pinhel, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo and Cova da Beira.
It is a very productive grape variety of medium-sized bunches and berries; it is particularly sensitive to powdery and downy mildew.
Rufete rarely produces high quality wines. However, if it achieves the optimum ripening time (at the end of autumn), it can produce full-bodied, aromatic wines capable of staying in bottle for many years. This grape variety only produces good wines in specific microclimates, such as, for example, Pinhel’s. This is why it is mainly used in the production of blend wines.
