Name Semilão
Type of grape variety White
Description Low quality white grape variety, more intensively cultivated in the Penafiel sub-region and with no representativeness. Productive, it produces neutral and unbalanced wines.

Synonymy: or «Semilhão», it probably corresponds to the «Boal» of the Douro region and the «Sémillon» in France.

Budding open, cottony, white and with the margin slightly carmine.
Young leaf yellow with bronze spots; shiny; very cottony on the down side of the blade.
Flower androgynous.
Shoots internodes and nodes with red striations on the back side and green on the frontal side; strong anthocyanin pigmentation of the buds; erect to half-erect growth.
Tendrils discontinuous, medium length, webbed and straight.
Adult leaf small size, wedge-shaped, with three to five lobes, dark green, consistent, irregular outline with the margins slightly folded up and bubbly; short teeth, convex margins, slightly open petiolar sinus with a V shaped base, open upper lateral sinus with a V shaped base; cottony on the down side, glabrous petiole of the same length as the medium main vein.
Bunch medium size; cylindrical-conic; medium compactness; medium length peduncle and insignificant lignification.
Berry medium size, irregular, elliptic-short; yellow green colour, little bloom; medium thick skin and apparent hilum; soft, juicy pulp with a simple flavour; medium long pedicel of easy separation.
Seeds medium size, irregular, elliptic-short; yellow green colour, little bloom; medium thick skin and apparent hilum; soft, juicy pulp with a simple flavour; medium long pedicel of easy separation.
Stalks elliptic cross-section, striated surface, yellow brownish colour; straight; short internodes and large nodes; small, low, cup-shaped and prominent buds.
