Name Cercial
Type of grape variety White
Description Cercial is grown in different viticultural regions, which explains why it may have different spelling and slightly different characteristics. The most famous are the Cercial of Douro and Dão, the Cerceal of Bairrada and the Sercial of Madeira, also known in Douro as Esgana de Cão.
The main qualities of the Cercial varieties are high production and good acidity.
This grape variety produces the famous fortified wine Sercial of Madeira, a dry wine that after ageing exhibits exceptional characteristics. Monovarietal wines from this grape variety are usually a little unbalanced, which is why Cercial is usually blended with other grape varieties such as Bical, Fernão Pires or Malvasia Fina. In these wines, the characteristics inherited from Cercial are the high acidity and delicate aromas.
